How accurate is our duration estimator for very short surveys? To find out, we tested the tool on an online questionnaire consisting of 4 pages (or screens) and a total of 5 questions.

Here’s a breakdown of the survey content:

  • Screen 1: introduction with a short text of 30 words.
  • Screen 2: a closed-ended question (8 words).
  • Screen 3: a matrix with 3 rows, each item averaging 5 words.
  • Screen 4: an open-ended question (9 words).

The age distribution of respondents—although not particularly relevant in this case—was even: about 20% in each age group from 20 to 69 years old. The survey was conducted in both French and German, and more than 10,000 responses were collected.

The estimated completion time provided by our tool was 1 minute and 5 seconds, with a range between 1 minute 3 seconds and 1 minute and 7 seconds. The actual average completion time observed (n > 10,000) was 1 minute and 5 seconds.

Conclusion: Remarkably, the calculator's predicted value was exactly right!
